Understanding Symbols on Products
The TM means Trademark, the R means a Registered Trademark.
|
This symbol means that the work is protected so that the only the creator has the right to use it by law.

What's the Difference Between Trademark and Copyright?
Designers use Trademark and Copyright to protect their designs from being copied.
If a design is covered by copyright and another company creates something very similar then they can be sued for breach of copyright. The symbol on a product shows the consumer that the product carrying that symbol is an original and not a copy.
Trademark protects the design (it protects the brand identity; blending of colours, font type, imagery etc.) for example part as a sports company you could not use a tick in your designs as this is trademarked by Nike.
