The Big Five Considerations
Wear PPE
Personal Protective Equipment; for examples goggles, gloves, aprons, ear defenders & dust masks. |
Use Machine Guards
These stop you from touching moving parts of the machine that could be dangerous. |
Emergency Stops
Know where they are on the machines and where they are in the room. |
No Loose Clothing
This greatly reduces the risk of entanglement. |
Use Extraction
Or wear a dust mask, or respirator. Make sure your lungs are protected from inhaling anything harmful, like dust or spray paint. |
Other Considersations
· Training in manual handling to avoid injury from lifting heavy loads.
· Risk assessments to assess the nature of hazards and reduce the risk of injury.
· Specific training on the safe use of each machine to prevent accidents from unauthorised use.
· Make sure you have fire training / fire exits / extinguisher
· Make sure first aid is available
· Make sure safety signage is visible and clear

Risk Assessments
These are used to calculate the risk involved with using certain equipment or completing a process. They are scored based on the severity if an accident occurred and the likelihood of it happening.
For example an accident involving a circular saw would be severe, if it had no guarding and the user wasn't trained the likelihood would be high making that activity too risky. If there were guarding, safety training and proper PPE then the likelihood would be reduced to unlikely but severity would stay high, this would place the risk in the orange area.
